ACM Artistic Director Scott Parkman and the Musicians of American Century Music present the first program in a three-part series at the Boston Public Library.
The concert features pieces for solo and chamber winds by composers with important affiliations to Boston. Arthur Berger (1912-2003) held faculty positions at Brandeis University and the New England Conservatory. His Quartet in C Major was described by fellow composer and critic Virgil Thomson as “one of the most satisfactory pieces for winds in the whole modern repertory.”
Amy Beach (1867-1944), longtime resident of Boston, was celebrated during her lifetime as the foremost woman composer of the United States. ACM presents her only work for wind quintet, Pastorale, op.151.
Clarinetist Kevin Price will perform A Set for Clarinet, by Donald Martino (1931-2005) who held faculty positions at the New England Conservatory, Brandeis University and Harvard.
The program concludes with the Wind Quintet by Walter Piston (1894-1976). Known in his lifetime as the ultimate musical craftsman, Piston was on the faculty of Harvard from 1926-60, during which time he taught many of the major American composers of the 20th century, including Arthur Berger, Leonard Bernstein, and Elliott Carter.
